ENERGY SECTOR
Understanding the need for accuracy and delivering with certainty.
BTW brings planning, surveying, engineering, environmental, digital and project delivery expertise together for complex energy projects. From early feasibility and land access through consenting, design, construction and ongoing operations, our teams understand the technical, regulatory and stakeholder requirements involved in major energy investment – covering solar, wind, geothermal, hydrogen, petroleum, and natural gas projects.
BTW supports renewable, downstream, and traditional energy sector projects across NZ with planning, engineering, surveying, and project management expertise.
HOW BTW SUPPORTS ENERGY PROJECTS:
- Feasibility assessments
- Land and site investigations
- Planning and consenting
- Community, Iwi and Stakeholder engagement
- Environmental reporting and mitigation
- Engineering and design (civil, structural, geotechnical, three-waters)
- Surveying and Geospatial solutions
- Land and asset management systems
- Construction support
- Monitoring and operations
With decades of experience in New Zealand’s Energy Sector, our team also delivers specialist support for seismic surveys and wellsite development, helping clients navigate complexity at every stage.
Complex energy projects. One connected team.
Because we’re multidisciplinary, clients get one integrated team for planning, engineering, surveying, environmental advice, GIS, and project management. This means smoother delivery, faster decisions, reduced risk, and clear, practical guidance across the full energy lifecycle, on new and existing sites.
BTW's specialist expertise for the Energy sector:
Renewable energy projects are inherently complex, requiring coordinated input across land, infrastructure, consenting, environmental assessment and risk, engineering, surveying, stakeholder engagement, construction constraints and long-term operational needs.
Across Aotearoa New Zealand, BTW supports innovative energy projects including zero-emission hydrogen and geothermal developments in Te Ika-a-Māui, large-scale solar in Taupō and Manawatū, and wind turbine developments in South Taranaki. Our connected team brings the right disciplines together to support projects from early feasibility through to delivery, monitoring and operation.
With teams across the central and lower North Island, including Taupō, we are well placed to support renewable energy developers, generators, asset owners, investors and project partners.
BTW has been involved in seismic survey work in New Zealand since the 1970s, with fine-tuned systems for this specialist work.
In response to client needs for efficient project management and reporting, we have developed DataPoint, an in-house web-enabled GIS management system for management of seismic surveying projects.
Our seismic survey services are integrated across the Company, and include web enabled GIS mapping and project management, development and maintenance of landowner databases, permitting and land access negotiation, resource consenting, community and Iwi consultation, public relations management, set out and survey of seismic lines, and restoration of seismic lines.
BTW specialises in taking wellsite development projects from the concept phase through to completion. We have managed the land access, consenting, design and construction of over 200 wellsites.
Our wellsite development services include; site selection, feasibility and costing, land access negotiation and landowner consultation, management of public relations with landowners and neighbouring parties, Iwi/Hapū consultation and relationships, topographical surveys and engineering design of wellsites and associated access tracks, resource consenting, assessments of environmental effects, applications for archaeological authority, geotechnical investigations and reporting, wellsite design, preparation of schedules of quantities, specifications and tender documentation for site construction, management of the tender process on behalf of our clients, management and supervision of site construction, co-ordination and supervision of conductor installation, full site set out and surveying including flare lines, skimmer pipes and cellar installation, environmental monitoring and preparation of spill response plans, and preparation of environmental management plans.
BTW offers the full range of mapping, land access, surveying, consenting, and engineering services associated with pipeline installation. Our field staff have an experienced “eye” for pipeline route selection. Our ability to integrate surveying with our GIS capability means we can provide all as-built pipeline information for on-going pipeline management purposes.
Our pipeline services include – route selection and mapping, feasibility studies, land access (easement agreements and compensation negotiation), topographical surveys, centre line surveys and detail surveys where required (e.g. for stream crossings or work in road reserves), civil and structural engineering for foundations and pipe bridges, geotechnical investigations, preparation of alignment drawings, easement/legal surveys
Resource consenting and other council permits (e.g. licenses to occupy road reserves, access to public land), web enabled GIS, silt/sediment control – advice, installation and monitoring, and spill contingency plans.
BTW has considerable experience in the development of production facilities for oil and gas as well as renewable energy products including solar, wind and hydrogen.
Our services include feasibility studies for site selection, geotechnical investigations, topographical surveys, community and Iwi liaison, preparation of Assessment of Environmental Effects, traffic engineering, resource consenting, environmental and consent compliance monitoring, survey control and survey set out during construction, civil engineering design, deformation monitoring, and project management.
BTW’s land access specialists have extensive experience and knowledge in cadastral systems, land access agreements and land management
Our team is skilled in consulting with affected parties and negotiating with landowners on a day-to-day basis. We also engage additional land access specialists as required on a project- by-project basis. Our Environmental Planners also support this. Few companies have such a large, widely experienced and dedicated team of land access professionals.
Our services include; establishment and maintenance of relationships with landowners on behalf of our clients, land access agreements under the Crown Minerals Act (e.g. for wellsites and seismic surveys), negotiation, compensation and payments associated with land access, easements, leases and rights of way, on-going management of long and short term access agreements, leases and annual compensation payments and reviews, preparation and execution of easement documentation (e.g. for pipelines), landowner, Iwi and community consultation, Written approvals from affected parties, and experience and established relationships with Department of Conservation, Fish and Game New Zealand, Waka Kotahi / New Zealand Transport Agency, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and QEII Trust.
