Helping clients navigate risk, approvals, and responsible development.

BTW’s environmental scientists and ecologists provide practical advice, technical expertise and clear guidance on environmental projects where environmental considerations, construction realities, regulatory requirements and long-term outcomes must be carefully balanced.

Working alongside BTW’s planning, surveying and engineering teams, we provide integrated environmental support from early feasibility and consenting through to construction, monitoring and ongoing management. Our team helps clients make informed decisions, manage environmental responsibilities and support positive long-term outcomes for both projects and communities.

Why choose BTW Environment:

Our team understands how environmental considerations interact with infrastructure delivery, construction methodologies, consenting pathways, restoration goals, and long-term operational requirements. This helps clients identify risks early, reduce delays and make informed project decisions.

WE OFFER:

  • Practical environmental advice grounded in real project delivery, not just reporting.
  • Environmental management plans, monitoring and reporting that support compliance, risk management and keeping projects on track whilst protecting human health and the environment.
  • Capability spanning ecology, contaminated land and asbestos surveys, and water services.
  • Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP) expertise within the team.
  • Experience across infrastructure, land development, energy, industrial and public sector projects.
  • Integrated support across planning, engineering, surveying and environmental disciplines.
  • Regional knowledge and experience with nationwide delivery, strong council relationships, and proven partnership with mana whenua across New Zealand.

BTW works across diverse and often challenging environments, from alpine terrain and wetlands to urban waterways and infrastructure sites. One day may involve monitoring aquatic species in an awa, the next supporting contaminated land investigations, waterway daylighting, or material reuse initiatives that contribute to the quality and character of public spaces. We are trusted environmental advisors on complex projects.

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES:

  • Early project engagement and risk assessment of environmental and ecological constraints and opportunities.
  • Ecological Assessments, Reporting and Biodiversity Advice.
  • Environmental and Ecological Monitoring, Compliance and Management Plans.
  • Contaminated Land Investigations and Site Management.
  • Asbestos Surveys and Management Plans.
  • Surface Water and Groundwater Investigations, Monitoring and Reporting.
  • Wai Eye Water Services, including stormwater network surveys and sensors, leak detection, water quality surveys and monitoring, and wetland identification and monitoring.

Environment – Your questions answered

What is an ecological survey?

An ecological survey is a structured assessment of habitats, flora and fauna to identify ecological values, potential effects and required mitigation. Often required for planning and resource consents, our  ecologists ensure assessments are practical and robust to support our environmental planning assessments.

What environmental approvals or investigations might my project need?

Environmental requirements vary depending on the site, proposed activity and local  rules and regulations. Our team helps identify risks early and advises on the assessments, monitoring and or management plans needed to support approvals and reduce delays later in the project. An environmental assessment demonstrates how potential effects will be managed under New Zealand’s consent frameworks.

Do you provide environmental services outside Taranaki?

Yes. Our ecologists and environmental scientists are currently delivering services that are supporting local councils, iwi and developers with projects throughout Waikato, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Central North Island and Taranaki. Our team is experienced with working in remote, technically challenging and environmentally sensitive locations, including alpine, coastal and infrastructure environments where specialist field capability and practical problem-solving is essential.

Can BTW monitor compliance during construction?

Yes. Our team provides on-site environmental compliance monitoring, reporting and adaptive management to keep you compliant and productive throughout construction.

Do you handle contaminated land from start to finish?

Yes. BTW’s contaminated land consultants manage the full process, from desktop reviews Preliminary Site Investigations (PSI) and Detailed Site Investigations (DSI) through to Remediation Action Planning, and Soil Validation Reports supporting council sign-off to enable future land developments.

Dave has also completed the BOHS IP404 Air Monitoring, Clearance and Reoccupation following the Removal of Asbestos.

Dave has more than 20 years of environmental experience throughout New Zealand. With Dave’s experience in contaminated land investigations, he has significant experience with asbestos in soil and associated buildings that have contained asbestos. Dave has represented clients in the Environment Court for hydrocarbon remediation and has experience in managing significant environmental projects for both local and national clients.

Greg Larkin – Princpal Ecologist

BSc, MEnvSc

Greg holds a BSc in Ecology from Lincoln University and a Master’s in Environmental Science (Distinction) from the University of Otago.

Greg brings over 19 years of experience in resource and water management, with a strong focus on aquatic and terrestrial ecology, surface water and stormwater quality. His expertise spans ecological impact assessments (EcIA), wetland delineation and environmental sampling across diverse ecosystems in Aotearoa New Zealand.

He has extensive experience preparing and peer review of technical assessments to support resource consent applications, including land use, subdivision and discharge consents.
