New Zealand’s geothermal sector is entering a new phase of opportunity, with national strategy, regional investment and renewable energy demand all pointing toward continued growth.
In March 2026, the Government released From the Ground Up: A strategy to unlock New Zealand’s geothermal potential. The strategy sets an ambition to double geothermal energy use by 2040 and recognises the role geothermal can play in electricity generation, industrial heat, regional resilience and economic growth.
For developers, generators, asset owners, iwi, investors and project partners, this growth brings significant opportunity. It also brings complexity.
Energy projects require more than one technical input. They often involve land and site investigations, planning and consenting, stakeholder engagement, environmental assessment, engineering design, surveying, digital data, construction support and long term monitoring.
Cam Twigley, BTW Director and Principal Planner, says, “When technical disciplines are connected early, projects are better placed to move forward with clarity. For energy projects, that means understanding the planning, environmental, land and infrastructure requirements as part of one project picture, rather than treating them as separate workstreams.”
BTW brings planning, surveying, engineering, environmental, digital solutions and project delivery expertise together through one connected team.
With a Taupō office, and teams across the central and lower North Island, BTW is well placed to support renewable energy projects from feasibility through to operation.
As New Zealand Geothermal Week approaches in August, our team welcomes conversations with energy sector clients and partners planning the next generation of geothermal and other renewable energy projects.
