Supporting the reopening of Huatoki Stream

  • February 27, 2026
  • Topic Community, Environment, Infrastructure, Te Ao Māori

The reopening of the Huatoki Stream marks a significant moment for central New Plymouth. For generations, the awa has flowed beneath parts of the city centre. Now, as demolition of Metro Plaza gets underway (due to start March 2nd), that waterway will once again become visible and accessible.

BTW has supported this work as Environmental Engineering specialists (as part of a broader project team), guiding the technical approach to daylighting the awa and providing some supporting cadastral survey services. This project forms part of a wider Public and Private Partner initiative, aligned with NPDC’s broader commitment to long-term CBD strategy projects.

Huatoki becomes a defining feature of the city’s identity and experience. A seamless thread through the CBD, and a space where adjoining buildings and public areas respond to the presence of water.

Sean Husband, BTW Civil Team Leader explains, “This is not simply an urban design project. It reflects a wider commitment to restoring the health of the awa through a Mai Taranaki Maunga ki Uta ki Tai approach, recognising the interconnectedness of mountain, land, waterways and sea. The work extends beyond the city centre and considers the whole catchment.”

BTW is proud to support projects that strengthen connection between people, place and environment. Bringing the Huatoki back into view is about restoring ecological health, improving resilience, and creating a city centre that feels distinctly Ngāmotu.
